Pointing Brickwork
There are five basic ways that brickwork can be pointed, each has its advantage or disadvantage. The method used will depend on a number of factors, including customer preference.
Why has my pointing been lost in places?
It could be that your mortar has perished and allowed water penetration. In the winter this might have frozen and pushed out the mortar. There are other reasons but only a close inspection can give a definitive answer.
Only some of my pointing is missing, can you replace only the missing pointing?
Probably not, it really depends on the cause. It would be very difficult to match colours and the replacement pointing would probably stand out like a sore thumb.
